Bendigo Community Worker Forum

Bendigo Library cropAre you a community worker? Do you support clients at court? Want to know more about clients’ rights and the court system?

Fitzroy Legal Service, in collaboration with community legal centres across Victoria, is hosting 11 Community Worker Forums in 2014-15. These forums have previously been hosted by FLS locally in the City of Yarra. After receiving a grant from the Victoria Law Foundation, FLS is pleased to be able to roll out this highly popular program across Metro Melbourne and Regional Victoria.

Expert and specialist legal staff will be presenting on the following topics:

Introduction to the Criminal Justice System
Overview of criminal procedures (including investigation, arrest, remand, bail, charge), police powers, common offences, and referral pathways.

Sentencing and Therapeutic Jurisprudence
Examination of sentencing options including those of a therapeutic nature (Diversion, CISP, Community Corrections Orders), how to liaise with lawyers, prepare your client for court and providing court reports and evidence.

Civil Legal Matters and Community Workers
Overview of the infringements and fines processes, Victims of Crime Tribunal, and Family Law Intervention Orders.

Duty of Care and Confidentiality
Exploration of duty of care concepts such as ‘reasonable care’ and ‘foreseeable risk’ and the legal and ethical requirements of client confidentiality
