In the run up to the state election on November 27th 2014, the Loddon Campaspe Community Legal Centre is proud to be hosting a candidates forum focussing on the marginal seats of Bendigo East and Bendigo West.
Following on from the successful Talking Justice and Justice Bites events, the open forum will be an opportunity for members of the public to put justice-related questions to our candidates (and two current sitting members). Justice issues currently of interest to residents of Bendigo and surrounds may include subjects such as: sentencing reform and prison policy, drug use and legal responses, family violence prevention, justice infrastructure, mental health, access to social housing and housing support and child protection.
The format of the evening will begin with candidates providing an opening statement, and then questions from the public will be moderated by local Bendigo lawyer John McPherson, partner at Arnold Dallas & McPherson lawyers.
Jacinta Allan MP – Labor for Bendigo East
Jennifer Alden – Greens for Bendigo East
Maree Edwards MP – Labor for Bendigo West
John Brownstein – Greens for Bendigo West
Elise Chapman – Australian Country Alliance
Charlie Crutchfield – Sex Party for Northern Victoria
At this point we are disappointed not to be welcoming Liberal candidates for Bendigo West and East to the event (both declined the invitation) given that the Coalition has instituted a range of significant changes in the justice arena during their first term in office, including reforms to child protection, the family violence system, public transport safety, parole and suspended sentences, justice infrastructure and social housing support, to name but a few.
