Sex, the law and young people

Many young people first encounter the law when exploring sex and relationships. To help local youth understand their rights and responsibilities in relation to sex and relationships, we’ve teamed up with Legal Aid in Bendigo to help young people make informed decisions and pursue healthy relationships.

Our community legal education worker, Charlotte Powell, has commenced a new shared role with VLA in Bendigo. The partnership will educate young people aged 12 -18  in schools and alternative school settings in and around Bendigo.

Charlotte will also develop a Presenter’s Kit and train other Community Legal Education workers and solicitors in other VLA offices and CLCs so they can deliver the sessions in schools in their region.

The program will engage young people in a conversation about the legal aspects of sex and relationships. Topics will include sexting, pornography, age of consent, pregnancy, contraception, abortion, healthcare and confidentiality. The sessions will inform young people about their rights and responsibilities and will point them towards avenues for assistance and support.

By helping young people to pursue healthy relationships through informed decisions, we hope to reduce their contact with the legal system.

The sessions will be presented by Charlotte Powell, Clare Vierboom (a VLA solicitor) and ‘guest’ presenters. They will be relaxed and informal; questions and comments from the participants will be encouraged.

For more information, please contact Charlotte Powell on (03) 5448 2314 at Victoria Legal Aid, Bendigo.
